a quick hurricane sandy update

update (11/3): the lights are on and we’re back! yipee!!

hello all!  hurricane sandy has knocked out power to our area.  we will resume order fulfillment as soon as the power returns (hopefully by this weekend).  we are checking email intermittently and thank you for your patience.

keep calm and carry on crafting, we say!

french patisserie market tote

every so often, yuwa turns out a fabric for its live life collection that we quite literally drool over! available in 4 colors, this yuwa fabric (which we’ve called french pastry recipe), is festooned with the loveliest french afternoon tea delights and heirloom recipes for the sweetest sweets. one of these days, we’re going to try baking from one of the recipes to see what they turn out!

now, one of the best things about fall in nyc is that the farmers’ markets are brimming with a resplendent fall harvest − the sort that reminds us of those delightful summer markets in the south of france. . .

. . . which gave us the idea to whip up some french patisserie market totes.  we designed them so that along with showcasing our favorite yuwa fabric to date, they also fold up in a compact fashion, allowing us to store them in our every day bag and whip them out as needed. and of course, these are made with french seams, so that no serger is required or fiddling with the overlock stitch function on your machine.

here’s what we did . . . (more…)

meet baby monstaa!

boo! are you scared?  it’s baby monstaaa . . . he’s rolled into town for halloween, and in between playing peekaboo and letting out some frightening baby monstaa screams, he’s making a guest appearance on our blog.

and here’s the knitting pattern for baby monstaa’s very scary bonnet  . . . (more…)

divine demeter

for fall, we channeled demeter, the greek goddess of the autumn harvest, who the ancients believed blessed the earth with a bountiful fall season. our demeter cowl features a large-scale repeating wheat sheaf motif – a recurring symbol of demeter’s mythology.

demeter is knit on US15 needles with crème de cashmere, making it a speedy and sumptuous knit. It feels amazing too!

the demeter pattern is free with the purchase of crème de cashmere yarn required to make this project.  just write “demeter” in the comments box and we’ll send you a hardcopy of the pattern.

come on, get happy

you could say that we got curious.  somewhere sandwiched between all the big name japanese fabric designers, we came across miri porun, a small capsule collection conjured up by the japanese artist yoshie (ヨシエ).  after some digging around, we came across her website, which bursts with a child-like whimsy and joy! we couldn’t help by smile and feel our spirits lifted as we thumbed through her original artworks, particularly the ones she pieces together with bits of fabric (check it out, if you get a chance . . . go to her website and then click on artwork / fabric)

yoshie’s fabric, which she publishes under the miri porun label, is produced by japanese fabric giant, Kokka.  here’s a picture (above) of her 2012 collection at a tradeshow, which contains some pretty nifty totes and bags.

we found ourselves particularly drawn to Apollo – a fabric printed on a medium weighy oxford cotton filled with elephants bathing between an earth of bright lines and a folksy interpretation of the moon and sun. it spoke to us as an incredibly exuberant celebration of life!  of course, we bought some for the shop (apollo can be purchased here)!

keira is free with the purchase of the yarn required to make the project.  just write “keira” in the comments box and we’ll send you a hardcopy of the pattern.  there’s no need to add the pattern into your cart to receive the offer.
